Cape Town’s Green Shack

Cape Town’s Green Shack

Company from Cape Town, Touching the Earth Lightly, designed a new kind of Green Shack, they even say it is revolutionary. It was presented at the Design Indaba. This green shack is designed by Stephen Lamb, a designer, and Andrew Lord, an artist. According to them, it is a low-tech solution to flooding and fires. This shack shares four features that are being used in the world.

One of the features is floor-on-stilt. This means that the floor is above the floodplain, which is useful against flooding. On sides that are facing to sun, it has small ‘’gardens’’. This is not an actual garden it is a small place that is used for growing plants. Especially plants that can provide food. Although, this is a very small space, users can grow several plants of tomatoes, potatoes and etc. It can even be useful against fires! I believe that this is the best thing about this green shack. On the other side are sand bags. They have only one purpose, to stop the fire. Although this is recommended by designers, user can replace these bags with something else. Maybe water tanks can be useful. There are no need for using candles and paraffin lamps (which are responsible for 30% of the fires), because this green shack has a low-cost solar light and a ‘’litre of light’’. Solar lamp is used only at night, and this ‘’litre of light’’ feature is used during the day. Basically, it is a bottle that reflects sunlight to the shack.

At the end, we can say that this is a great solution for many problems. And, it is cheap, so many people can afford it!
